Robotics

Working in harsh environments, such as offshore and subsea, or in remote areas or extreme sour gas fields require more automation and remote operation. Furthermore, with decreasing number of expert staff available, remote operation enables optimization of the use of human capital employed. Technological developments in oil and gas enables remote operations and creates a safer working environment.

The use and adoption of Inspection Repair and Maintenance (IRM) robotics in the petrochemical industry is rapidly gaining momentum. Especially in the current climate of low oil prices the drive for increased productivity, reduction in downtime of plants, has sparked a high level of interest in the opportunities that service robotics have to offer. Main applications are inspection, repair and maintenance as well as construction, remote operation and subsea robotics.

Since the challenges are industry-wide and should be solved with the full value chain, the Open Innovation Centre i-Botics has been established. i-Botics hosts the Workgroup Robotics for Oil and Gas Reinvented.
