MEET OUR SPEAKERS: PIER STAPERSMA
During ERC's event 'From Friction to Flow' on 16 April Pier Stapersma (Director at CIEP) will provide a keynote on renewable energy challenges in a shifting geopolitical landscape.
Pier’s keynote offers a structured perspective on the geopolitical developments shaping today’s energy transition. He’ll begin by tracing how we arrived at today’s geopolitical landscape, discussing two parallel dynamics. The first follows the trajectory from the Paris Climate Agreement to the Dutch Climate Agreement and the energy projects that emerged from it. The second examines the broader geopolitical context — from the era of George W. Bush and the Iraq War, through shifting power balances and to the present-day situation. Building on this foundation, the keynote explores potential future scenarios. While uncertainty may be unsettling, history shows that periods of disruption can drive fundamental shifts in energy systems.
More on Pier Stapersma
Pier Stapersma is Director of the Centre for International Energy Policy, CIEP. After starting his career in the electricity business in 2007, he joined CIEP as a senior researcher in 2012. In 2024, he succeeded Coby van der Linde as Director. CIEP is a think tank in the field of international energy matters based in The Hague. It was founded in 2001. Initially, the research focus was on the establishment of the EU internal market for electricity and gas, alongside oil and gas supply security and geopolitics. Over time, the focus shifted to energy transition, next to energy supply security. In this regard, CIEP pays specific attention to the industrial sector. Pier Stapersma has conducted research across the full spectrum, ranging from dynamics in the Northwest European electricity market, to oil and gas supply security, to cleantech value chains such as solar PV and offshore wind in the North Sea region, to hydrogen market development, and more.
